This is the medieval fortress in Angers, built by the Plantagenets. Gaston's home estate is on the Maine River, which is a short wide river that runs through Angers before joining the Loire River. He would be familiar with this keep, as his family would be allied with the Duc d'Anjou. The flower gardens are planted in the original moat.

This will give you an idea of the geography behind the quest. The knights begin in Jerusalem, find passage in Acre, then sail to Venice (a route that isn't shown on this map. Find the yellow line, which is a route from Constantinople, to locate Venice.) From there, they follow the route marked by purple line to the St. Bernard Pass, then travel down to Paris, which is a little bit northwest of there. After that, their paths diverge.

This is Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, which was a sacred site at least as early as the 4th century and the site of an earlier church dedicated to St. Stephen. This building was begun in the 12th century.

Views of Paris At Night | Ever In Transit

A collection of my favorite photos of Paris at night. The romance of the city really comes out after dark.

Notre Dame Cathedral is famous for its gargoyles, but they are later than our period. Still, cool enough to share! Photo by © Paul Almasy / Corbis [Please keep photo credit and original link if reusing or repinning. Thanks!]

chimera

The carved creatures on the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, France, are often called gargoyles. However, gargoyles are used to drain water. These features, called chimeras, are used only as decorations.

Here's a map of Paris from 1550. Although the Paris Temple was no longer held by the Templars, you can still see the compound on this map. On the Ile de la Cité, the church of Notre Dame is the largest building. Follow the road across the bridge to the left - the Pont de Notre Dame). You'll reach a pair of big churches just before the city walls called St. Nicholas du Champs and St. Martin du Champs. Turn right onto la Rue du Verbois, which ends at L'Eglise du Temple. You're there!

Another image of the road rising to St. Bernard Pass, the ancient route through the Alps. If you look at a modern map, the pass is still used, although now there's also a tunnel: it goes from Aosta, Italy to Martigny, Switzerland.

This article is about an archeological dig of a 1,000-year-old Crusaders hospital constructed by the Order of St. John of the Hospitallers found in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. The Hospitaliers were a competing order of knights to the Templars, but the timing is good on this.

I love Racinet's costume illustrations. Here's his page on medieval French royalty, 12th through 14th centuries. In the top row, you can see the knights in their chain mail surcoats, and the ladies of the court below. It's later than our era for the women to wear heraldic emblems on their bliauts (dresses) or those very pointed hats.
