Sharing your story of your experiences with mental illness can be a powerful way of challenging stigma and replacing stereotypes with real human faces. When sharing for the purpose of challenging stigma, there are certain strategies you an use to help you be most effective, such as talking about the times you got knocked downn, but emphasizing how you got back up each time. Borderline personality disorder involves a persisten pattern of instability in relationships, self-image, and emotions, with marked impulsivity. Other symptoms include desperate efforts to avoid real or perceived abandonment; unstable, intense relationships, fluctuating between idealizing and devaluing (splitting), periods of intense anger, and persistent feelings of emptiness. A major depressive episode can occur in the context of major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, or schizoaffective disorder. Symptoms include depressed mood, anhedonia (which is the loss of interest/pleasure in almost all activities), feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt, insomnia or sleeping excessively, significant increase or decrease in appetite and weight, low energy, problems concentrating, and thoughts of suicide. In the DSM-5, personality disorders are grouped into three clusters. Cluster A (odd/eccentric) includes paranoid, schizoid, and schizotypal personality disorders. Cluster B (dramatic/emotional/erratic) includes borderline, narcissistic, antisocial, and histrionic PDs. Cluster C (anxious/fearful) includes avoidant, dependent, and obsessive-compulsive PDs. Writing out a treatment plan can be a good way to consider what strategies are helping you to manage your depression. Medications and psychological interventions like therapy may be obvious strategies that you're using, but there are likely other things contributing to your overall wellness. Having an idea of what those strategies are can help remind you to keep engaging in self-care and meaningful activities. This worksheet is available as a downloadable PDF on Mental Health @ Home.
A number of medications that are commonly used to treat mental illness require regular blood tests for ongoing monitoring, including lithium, valproic acid, carbamazepine, and clozapine. There are two broad groups of antipsychotics, typicals and atypicals. Both block dopamine receptors, but atypicals also act at a type of serotonin receptors. While typicals are mostly used for treating psychosis, atypicals also have a number of other uses, including bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder. Mood stabilizers are used in bipolar disorder to treat and prevent manic highs and depressive lows. Lithium was the drug originally used as a mood stabilizers. It was then discovered that certain anticonvulsants have mood stabilizing activity. More recently, it's been discovered that atypical antipsychotics also act as mood stabilizers.
