Black Style in the Belle Epoque - 1890-1914

This board displays the image of Blacks in the Belle Epoque, circa 1890 -1914. I am a strong proponent of citing sources - the photographs lose their significance and relevance when there is no context to my mind. Even an attempt to date the photos using costume history is helpful. My thanks to the Toronto Vintage Society and to my friends in the Toronto Burlesque and Vaudeville Alliance, as well as members of the Society for Creative Anachronism for their assistance.

Hugh Mangum, a gregarious white itinerant photographer, rode the trains to the small towns of North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia from 1909-1912. This un-named young woman is the subject of four "penny portraits" in his lighthearted style.
