The Joy of Mixing!
Before my brush touches my canvas, I mix my paints on a palette. I love to create my own colours. I start with the three primaries and keep blending until I get what I need. It’s a game I play every morning. And it’s not only eye candy. To me, it’s mind candy too!

Messy Work! Gesso Day in the Studio
As an oil painter, I need to prep my wooden panels before I can start my painting. I use a product called Gesso which acts as a primer. This process prepares the surface and makes it ready to accept the paint. Without Gesso, the paint would soak into the wood. I usually apply two or three coats before painting. I let the gesso dry thoroughly and then I use sandpaper to eliminate any roughness that I don't want. The studio was a HUGE MESS afterwards but I had a great day.

Shop Art
II don't like to paint on a white canvas. I prefer to start in a medium value. Open to anything. I choose burnt sienna because it speaks to me. From here, an oil painting will follow.

I love BLACK Gesso!
Oil painters know all about prepping the canvas before we can start painting. We use a product called Gesso which is like a primer. It prepares the surface and makes it ready to accept the paint. Without Gesso, the paint would soak into the wood or canvas. I usually apply two or three coats before painting. I let it dry thoroughly and then I use sandpaper to eliminate any roughness that I don't want. It is a very soothing process but it does get MESSY! 🙃

Let the fun begin! Sharpening my Pencils...
Let the fun begin -- Sharpening pencils is part of my process. It takes time. And it must be done very, very carefully. I always show up for this part. Because what inspires me? Is actually doing the work!

A little IMPASTO!
Impasto techniques have been used by artists for hundreds of years. Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Jackson Pollock to name a few. For me, impasto increases opacity, body and texture and is ideal for creating extreme textures. I like to apply it on THICK! I use an artist-quality Modelling Paste to build up depth. I like to wait at least 24 hours for it to cure. Only then, will I begin the process of adding layers of oil colours. With my BRUSH! And another part of the process begins.
