LA THUILE - ITALY is a smallish affordable Italian resort that is lift linked to the French resort of La Rosiere. It has great untracked off-piste opportunities and mountain restaurants are surprisingly affordable. It's a decent quiet ski resort that has enough to keep most occupied for a week or so.

LA PLAGNE - France is one of the major purpose built 1960s resorts. Now linked to neighbouring Les Arcs (which is better) to form the Paradiski it is the second largest lift linked ski area in the world. Still this place doesn't really do it for me.

TIGNES - FRANCE The ugly sister of neighbouring Val D'Isere shares the same world class ski area but has more affordable accommodation and a less charming resort atmosphere. Still a great place though with arguably the better half of the Espace Killy ski area.

ISOLA 2000 - FRANCE Less than two hours drive from Nice on the Mediterranean coast, Isola 2000 is something of a novelty. Although smallish by European standards, it regularly gets heavy snowfalls due to its maritime proximity. A strange mix of Monte Carlo jetset and normal French families share the slopes.

VERBIER - SWITZERLAND Like Chamonix, Verbier is a magnet for extreme skiers, to get the best out of this place, hire a guide and hit the off-piste. This is not a great on-piste resort but people say one of the best challenging areas in the world. I only came here for a day and didn't really get the best out of it.

Reliable snow for freeskiers in Verbier, Switzerland.

LES DEUX ALPES - A rather strange French ski area. All the challenging slopes are at the bottom and are mainly nasty icy blacks, while the beginner pistes are 2,000 metres higher on the glacier. The town feels a bit like Las Vegas in the Alps, not my favourite.
