Emily Carr - Trees in the Sky: I was not ready for abstraction. I clung to earth and her dear shapes, her density, her herbage, her juice. I wanted her volume, and I wanted to hear her throb.

Emily Carr, a famous Canadian artist. She's probably more well-known from later photos as an old woman, but I've always liked this photo, representing a young woman about to travel to the US and Europe in search of herself and her art.

Emily Carr was born in Victoria, British Columbia on December Canadian artist and writer heavily inspired by the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast.
