The ability to read unfamiliar words and come up with accurate spelling is a large part of efficient reading and writing. Word study is a newer and more effective way of teaching spelling, than the previous way which consisted of weekly spelling tests and hard drills. Word study allows students to investigate and understand patterns in words, rather than memorizing multiple individual words. Understanding word patterns allows students to spell a variety of words using the same patterns.

INSTRUCTION Word walls are a fun way to encourage the correct spelling and use of high frequency words. Having a word wall that is easily accessible to all students, is very encouraging for students to want to use and spell these words correctly. It becomes easy to use these words in daily activities and games. This teacher has placed coloured paper behind each word, to differentiate each word and increase focus on each word.

INSTRUCTION A very effective strategy for enhancing student vocabulary and spelling is through the use of root words. For example, in this photo the students of this grade 2 class have been exploring photosynthesis in their science unit. This teacher took this as an opportunity to explore the meaning of photosynthesis and use the root word "photo" to gain a true understanding of this word. She then asked the students for all the words they knew that included the word "photo" in it.
