This one is a killer (30 to 70% mortality). Streptococcal Necrotizing Fasciitis or NF. It is initially devoid of surface abnormalities but has pain and fever. The area becomes tender and swollen. Later the color changes to a dark red as thrombosis occurs (blood clot formation). Once the clot forms the area becomes ischemic (devoid of oxygen and nutrients from normal blood flow) and the skin dies and turns black.
