Out of Africa: The incredible tribal fashion show inspired by Mother Nature
With colourful make-up, flamboyant accessories and elaborate decorations, you'd be forgiven for thinking these images originated in the fevered mind of some leading fashionista. Yet far from the catwalks of New York, London or Paris, these looks are the creation of the Surma and Mursi tribes of East Africa's Omo Valley
The Mursi (or Murzu) are a Nilotic pastoralist ethnic group that inhabits southwestern Ethiopia. They principally reside in the Debub Omo Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region, close to the border with South Sudan. According to the 2007 national census, there are 7,500 Mursi, 448 of whom live in urban areas; of the total number, 92.25% live in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region (SNNPR). © All rights reserved | www.antoniociufo.it | Getty…

The people of the Surma and Mursi tribes are body painters -- they paint their bodies with pigments made from the earth. Mothers paint babies, children and adults paint themselves and each other in a tradition that seems unchanged for thousands of years. Their paintings range from abstract designs of circles, lines, dots and swirls, sometimes focused on specific body parts, to all-over patterns of flowers, zig-zags and fingerprints that form a dazzling array on the entire body.
