Bagpiper at Canso Causeway opening in 1955. Before the causeway was built with rock blasted from Cape Porcupine, the only way to travel between mainland Nova Scotia and Cape Breton was by boat, ferry, car ferries, etc. The Canso Strait freezes in winter on one side and the other side stays ice free and open. There are locks and a swing bridge on the causeway to allow passage for the many vessels travelling through the Strait.
