Happy Lucky 13th Follower Freebie

Lucky number thirteen! I love the number 13 - it's my favorite. Hubby and I were married on Friday the 13th and 13 has always felt like a pretty lucky number to me. Let's celebrate my 13th follower!!!!! For our social studies unit on families we talked about how we and our family change over time. Click here for a cute little timeline worksheet. Click here for a different look of the same worksheet.

After talking about animal life cycles, we talked about how we have a life cycle also. The kids illustrated their own "I Grow and Change" books. Buggy about Life Cycles!

To wrap up our animal unit, we learned all about insects and life cycles! I used activities from my Insect/Life cycle unit if you are interested! We had already learned about insects back in kindergarten so we reviewed insects and did a sort in our science journals. The kids remembered lots of great characteristics such as six legs, three body parts, lays eggs, etc. They also remembered that a spider is not an insect! We then read books on insects and learned facts about different insects we…

The Thoughtful Spot Day Care

Our caterpillars have arrived! Our caterpillars arrived in the mail today. They are about a half inch long. The stuff in the bottom of the cup is their food. They have formed webs in the jar to maneuver around, and yes the "stuff" stuck to the web is their waste! I will take a picture again in a couple days and they will probably have doubled their size!

I Used to Think,...Now I Think...1st Graders Reflect on their Learning

Do you wait until the end of a unit before you assess students' learning? That seems to be the "traditional" way to evaluate what a student has learned, but learning is more than the accumulation of knowledge; learning is a consequence of thinking. How do you teach your students to become more thoughtful? Well, today I'm sharing how I used a Visible Thinking routine as a formative assessment on my students' learning about cycles. My goal was to get them to be reflective about how their…
