Victoria Tower (1867-1916) was built for the capital city of Ottawa, Canada as the home for the new federal Parliament. As it appeared from 1867 to 1916. Destroyed by fire in 1916, it was replaced by the current Centre Block on Parliament Hill.

Canadian Prime Minister Sir Robert Borden was working quietly on his correspondence in the Centre Block on Parliament Hill. At the same time, members of Parliament were debating Canada’s fisheries in the nearby Commons chamber. All seemed normal in political Ottawa on Feb. 3, 1916. Then disaster struck, shattering a cold winter’s night. By the following day, almost total destruction of the Parliament buildings, together with the loss of several lives.
