I am not a Halloween person! But now that I have kids, I guess I have no choice. We are even dressing up this year. Last time I dressed up was in 1994. So, I came up with a list of things to do with my oldest this October! Most are Halloween related and a few are fall related! But if you need more ideas, check out my Pinterest "Halloween" board. Poppy Mixed Media

Well this is the Remembrance Day project I have come up with for this year "Mixed Media Poppies". Tape off your watercolor or white sketch paper for that nice finished edge and then paint in your background color with disc tempera. While the paint is still wet cover with a layer of plastic wrap and smoosh it slightly. Leave in place until dry. While your background is drying work on your poppy papers. You want a few types. The epitome of sacrifice and courage in the Anzac spirit. Duffy the Donkey transported injured soldiers to safety at Gallipoli, with his owner John Simpson.

John "Jack" Simpson Kirkpatrick (centre of picture) who served under the name John Simpson, was a stretcher bearer with the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) during the Gallipoli Campaign. After landing at Anzac Cove on 25 April 1915, he obtained a donkey and began carrying wounded soldiers from the frontline to the beach, for evacuation. He did this for three and a half weeks, often under fire, until he was killed. Simpson and his Donkey are a key part of the "Anzac legend".

Anzac Day Poppy Potato Prints!

As part of our History study this term we will be looking at Anzac Day, and in particular focusing on our local war memorial as well as other symbols associated with the day. I love using simple craft activities to help introduce new concepts to my class. Not only do they learn more when having fun, their products really brighten up our room and are a good reminder of key ideas in future weeks. Poppies have been associated with Anzac Day since the 1920s. The red poppy reminds us of the…
