These "stones" are actually sedimentary, compressed fossils of 350 million year old sea creatures. They're fairly uncommon (only found in this exact formation in northern Michigan), although you can find them in local northern Michigan stores for sale. I found this one on the beaches of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and the striking lines and shapes appear very pale until it gets wet. Most of the ones for sale have been varnished to bring out the unusual pattern.
