King George VI Family Order.It is the tradition for most royal families. Family orders are a personal gift of a Sovereign and are given to female members of the immediate family. In Great Britain, this custom was introduced by King George I, the first of the Hanoverian monarchs. Until the end of Queen Victoria’s reign the Order consisted of a cameo miniature set in diamonds. Edward VII introduced its present form of a portrait which was painted on ovory.
On 31 January 1952, despite advice from those close to him, the King went to London Airport to see off Princess Elizabeth, who was going on her tour of Australia via Kenya. On the morning of 6 February, George VI was discovered dead in bed at Sandringham House in Norfolk. He had died from a coronary thrombosis in his sleep at the age of 56.

She was laid to rest alongside her husband, King George VI, who died in 1952. * The casket that contains the ashes of Princess Margaret, who died in February, is also being placed in the vault.
