Concepts of Print refers to children's ability to understand how print and letters works on a page, book handling skills and punctuation.
Instruction

INSTRUCTION: In this activity the students have the opportunity to partake in a classroom post office where they will be instructed to create a classroom letter, learn the components of letter writing and become familiar with concepts of print.

INSTRUCTION: This activity allows students to develop their concepts of print as they interact with predictable sentences that were created by the students to create a class book. It also allows them to become familiar with sentence structure as they rearrange the sentences to make different pages. This is very engaging for the students as they have created the sentences themselves and it has meaning to them.

INSTRUCTION: Fill in the Blanks activity works towards developing concepts of print such as understanding how written sentences communicate the same information and spoken sentences, capitalization and punctuation. When completing this activity the teacher can enhance students awareness of letters by sounding the letters out ultimately leading to blending of words. They can also point out capitals as well as punctuation that occurs in the sentence.

INSTRUCTION: This activity is facilitated by the teacher to practice some concepts of print with the students such as author, illustrator, characters and setting. This activity is engaging for the students as they have a chance to come up and interact with the large book and reading glasses when addressing the concepts of print.

UNDERSTANDING: This Reading Rocket page provides insightful information to solidify my knowledge in the area of concepts of print. This page outlines that children with print awareness can begin to understand that written language is related to oral language. It is also stated that children who lack these skills will not be successful readers.

ASSESSMENT: This is an informal assessment on the concepts of print created by reading rocket. This assessment provides various questions to follow to gain the students knowledge on the different concepts of print such as different parts of a book, punctuation, of the parts of a story etc. This assessment can be useful for educators to target students who more support with concepts of print and which students are ready for more of a challenge.
