This Australian mineral-based pigment is a good granulating pigment with a soft green and burnt scarlet specks. It mixes well with other granulating pigments to make interesting color combinations. The first abstract was an experiment to see how it handled a lot of water. The second abstract was a play on how it could be used with plant life. #danielsmithwatercolors #danielsmithartistsmaterials #granulatingwatercolors @carolvaage Soft Green, Serpentine, Plant Life, Ds, Scarlet, Experiments, Color Combinations, Mineral, Pigment

This was one of my favorite colors when I first started watercolor because of its beautiful tones. Although it does not granulate much on its own, it does work with other colors to create theatrical granulation. The first abstract shows sap green with extra water and full strength. The second abstract is a celebration of the Sap color with Prussian green accent. #danielsmithwatercolors #danielsmithartistsmaterials #granulatingwatercolors @carolvaage Green Accents, Sap, Theatrical, Other Colors, Favorite Color, Smith, Celebration, Tones

This is a medium grey-green granulating color. As you can see in the mixes page, it does not have a strong tone on its own but adds shadows and softness to other granulating pigments. The first messy abstract was an attempt to use rare green earth in trees and foreground, but as I tend to prefer stronger reactions, I ended up adding more colors and water. The second abstract is a more controlled use of this color. #danielsmithartistsmaterials #granulatingwatercolors @carolvaage Trees, Earth, Water, Grey, Green Earth, Green, Color, Green And Grey

This mineral based pigment is one of the most beautiful greens that granulates spectacularly. On the mixes page, you’ll notice that some pigments have combined to create extraordinary textures, while more pale washes of Jadeite show less texture. The first abstract shows the rich and dynamic color fusions with near full-strength Jadeite. The second one suggests deep forests full of green textures. #danielsmithwatercolors #danielsmithartistsmaterials @carolvaage Green Texture, Deep Forest, Jadeite, Forests, Greens

A perfect color for painting forests because of the variation from green to deeper tones along with blue tones. As you will notice on the mixes page, the green and blue show through every color mixture. The first abstract gives you a hint at how cascade green will separate to provide those beautiful colors for forests. The second abstract uses more water to create more granulation. #danielsmithwatercolors #danielsmithartistsmaterials #granulatingwatercolors @carolvaage Blue Tones, Cascade, Separate, Abstract

This mineral based pigment separates brilliantly with varying greens and browns settling over them. The mixes page shows some wonderful blends especially with the yellow pigments. The first abstract shows the wide variations that using green apatite genuine can create with generous amounts of water. The second abstract was led by my brush that told me let the pigment work in the water, a bit at a time. #danielsmithwatercolors #danielsmithartistsmaterials @carolvaage Yellow, Green And Brown

This mid-range green is non-staining, so useful for glazing and layering. The mixes page shows the glazing effect as the cobalt green is the bottom color and other granulating pigments added over the wet pigment. The first abstract of a light filled tree shows how this color could be used for greenery. The second abstract shows the wonderful mingling of blues with this green. #danielsmithwatercolors #danielsmithartistsmaterials #granulatingwatercolors @carolvaage Cobalt, Greenery, Layering, Blues, Wonder

This is quite an unusual pigment, but it works well especially with more water. It granulates very well with other granulating pigments as you can see on this mixes page. I just love the Lunar Blue mixture. The first abstract of circles is cobalt green pale mixed with other colors. The second abstract shows the bleed melds with other colors – the cobalt green is mixed throughout, but minimally visible. #danielsmithwatercolors #danielsmithartistsmaterials @carolvaage Lunar, Circles, Pale, Unusual

This vibrant low-staining pigment is excellent for granulation. On the mixes pages the first thing you’ll notice is the dominant turquoise color. The first abstract was created with strong strokes with my brush as it responded to the intense color. The second abstract is full of movement and showcases this extraordinary color. #danielsmithwatercolors #danielsmithartistsmaterials #granulatingwatercolors @carolvaage Turquoise Color, Intense Colors, Dominant, Extraordinary, Daniel, Movement

This is a very strong granulating color that stands well on its own or with mixes. I really love the mixture of cobalt turquoise and jadeite genuine. The first abstract shows cobalt turquoise strong on its own and still granulating when diluted. I love the contrasts with the brighter colors in the second abstract. #danielsmithwatercolors #danielsmithartistsmaterials #granulatingwatercolors @carolvaage Bright Color, Genuine, Strong

This is one of many Duochrome pigments that have mica as a base covered with a metallic coating. This Cabo Blue is beautiful on its own as it reflects light to create different shades from blue to gold. Mixing with other colors intensifies the reflective nature. The first abstract brings the wave to life with the suggestion of water sparkling in the sunlight. The second abstract conjures dynamics with a wide variety of pigments and contrasts. #danielsmithartistsmaterials @carolvaage Duochrome, The Conjuring, Mica, Cabo, Sunlight, Reflective

This mineral pigment is a gorgeous color that ranges from medium to very dark pigments as it granulates. Every one of the colors I mixed with Blue Apatite Genuine created wonderful combinations. The first abstract incorporated the more blue colors to create this feather. The second abstract pulled the other colors to create some dynamic contrasts, especially with the Quinacridones. #danielsmith #danielsmithwatercolors #danielsmithartistsmaterials #granulatingwatercolors @carolvaage Blue Colors, Mineral Pigments, Ranges, Color Me, Minerals

This is a genuine gem caliber pigment coming from S. America. I love it for the pale blue great granulation. It doesn’t seem to mix well with other most of the pigments that I tried except for Amethyst Genuine. Makes me wonder if it’s because of mineral textures. The first abstract is dynamic with lapis lazuli on its own with more bold colors contrasting to create flow. The second abstract is a loose floral with mixed results. #danielsmithartistsmaterials @carolvaage Makes Me Wonder, Caliber, Lapis Lazuli, Bold Colors
