Amazon.com: 1913: The Eve of War eBook: Paul Ham. I found this book to be very compelling. It explained precisely how the web of alliances and mobilization timetables created an unstoppable march to war once the archduke was killed. The premier modern case study in fragile/anti-fragile systems. Sad takeaway not from the book: we're not learned these lessons. ***
Perfectly Legal: The Covert Campaign to Rig Our Tax System to Benefit the Super Rich--and Cheat Everybody Else - Kindle edition by David Cay Johnston. Came highly recommended. Yuck! Maybe I'm just overly cynical, but nothing in here surprised me or inspired me. It just made me sick and I don't need that. *
Jesus, the Final Days: What Really Happened - Kindle edition by Craig A. Evans, N. T. Wright. I'm trying to read more NT Wright because I respect his intelligence even though I feel like I understand about 50% of what he writes. It is a little like a foreign language; I think I get better with practice. A worthy book. **
The Ark Before Noah: Decoding the Story of the Flood - Kindle edition by Irving Finkel. The movie Noah came out this year and I picked up this book as part of that experience. It was scholarly and I actually found the most interesting part to be the chapter explaining cuniform. The author is an expert in that topic and I'm glad I got the lesson. **
Amazon.com: The Death of Money: The Coming Collapse of the International Monetary System eBook: James Rickards. I almost wish the title didn't sound so doom-and-gloom because I recommend this book a lot and it is a barrier for some. Don't let it be. Very readable and I mostly agree with Rickards' analysis.
A History of the Future: A World Made By Hand Novel - Kindle edition by James Kunstler. I interviewed Jim on the podcast for this book and we had a nice chat. I find this series to be really fun and I've come to like the characters a lot. This one got a little crazy -- it is JHK -- but I enjoyed it.
How Adam Smith Can Change Your Life: An Unexpected Guide to Human Nature and Happiness - Kindle edition by Russ Roberts. I really found this to be fun and approachable. Made me like Russ Roberts even more, although I'm sure that wasn't his intent. I think everyone can benefit from reading this book. ***
