Brantford Police Department 1931

This photograph which was taken in 1917 shows seventy-year-old Alexander Graham Bell in front of his parents' home in Brantford, Ontario. With him is his oldest daughter Elsie May. She married Gilbert Grosvenor who was the editor of the National Geographic Magazine which was started by Bell and his father-in-law. They set up the National Geographic Society in 1888. Elsie May and Gilbert had two sons and five daughters.

Photo: In the centre of the photo is Brantford's Boer War Memorial, erected in 1903 in Jubilee Terrace Park next to the armouries. Thirty Brantford men volunteered in late 1899 to serve in that war in South Africa. Three lost their lives.
