During hikes around Kilauea there were many places with large ferns, some of which had new growth--fiddleheads. Many of these were about head hight--2 m (~6+ ft).

Fern fiddleheads

Fern leaves often unroll themselves as they mature. The result, while they are still wrapped around themselves, is called a fiddlehead. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/martinlabar/sets/72157605712130430/">Here's</a> my fern set, which, unfortunately, doesn't have any photos as good as these! (It's mostly not of fiddleheads.)
