Ernie Coombs, known to Canada as Mr. Dressup would have celebrated his 85th birthday today were he still alive. The perennial children's entertainer was celebrated today in a Google doodle.

For 32 years, Ernie Coombs played Mr. Dressup and opened the doors to a world of imagination when he lifted the lid on his famous Tickle Trunk and shared in the antics of his faithful puppet friends Casey and Finnegan. Ernie Coombs (Mr. Dressup) first came to Canada in 1963 with pal Fred (Mister) Rogers who was working on the concept for his children's program at the CBC. Mr. Dressup was probably the most popular Canadian children's' program in the history of television starring him as Mr. Dressup, along with puppets Casey and Finnegan. Ernie Coombs was presented with Earle Grey Award in 1994, for excellence in Canadian television programming and a Member of the Order of Canada. Ernie died in 2001.
