Collage Cats

Last month 4th graders followed the lead of vintage collage artist Denise Fiedler (see her website here) to collage dogs from recycled newspaper and construction paper scraps. This month 3rd graders tried their hand at it producing cats. We started with a Smartboard lesson where students identified the basic geometric shapes they could see in cats, outlining the shapes with the whiteboard markers. Then, following some basic steps on the board, children cut and pasted to make their kitties…

3rd Grade - Joan Miro Abstract Freeform Shape Designs

Some of my favorite Joan Miro paintings are the ones with many shapes overlapping and creating new shapes. We looked at several of his works of art that created some interesting shapes from layering. To create our compositions, we drew two very large, loopy freeform shapes, with the goal to create other shapes. This lesson is a great transition between two larger lessons that take a few meeting times. This one only takes 2 class times and is very productive! Enjoy!

1st Grade - Art Folders inspired by Rousseau!

This lesson is inspired by Henri Rousseau's painting, Surprised! Storm in the Forest. I love this lesson for many reasons... First, the results are always great. Second, it is a great directed drawing lesson for first graders.... they all draw the same steps to complete a whole tiger, but they have no assistance, and feel proud and great at the end! Which results in my favorite reason I love this project... It is a creative confidence boost! You know they're proud when they work so hard to…

2nd Grade - Landscapes (SLO lesson) on Art Folders

This lesson might look familiar... This the lesson I taught my 2nd graders BEFORE the SLO test. The difference??? This was a directed drawing, making sure each student drew a house and a tree in the foregound, middleground and background. Very simple, they could add anything extra they wanted to that would be appropriate for a landscape. We first looked closely at several landscapes, but my favorite we used for our main drawing inspiration was this one below by Gabriele Munter. I show my…

3rd Grade - Ton Schulten Cityscapes

Ton Schulten is one of my all time favorite artists! I discovered him years ago when I found a calendar full of his paintings when visiting the Toledo Museum of Art. I was hooked! I love his amazing colors and abstract style. I created a Prezi of his landscape and cityscapes to share with my classes, (Ton Schulten Prezi). I find it very interesting how he adds lots of vertical lines to his landscapes, a composition usually created with more horizontal lines. This lesson was a COLOR VALUE…

1st Grade - Cityscapes AND Seascapes!

I love teaching young ones to notice the details of the world. Pointing out the differences within the landscape of our city, state and all over the world opens up our students minds to notice the details. Both these two projects include an element of printmaking. The city, we used cardboard and black paint to print a city and the seascape, we folded our paper to print the reflection of our boats. Both of these projects I found on Pinterest, and have adapted to my classroom. Enjoy!

This lesson is an "oldie but goodie". My mother and her art teacher pals created this lesson years ago. Square 1 Art, Picasso Portraits, Christian Holidays, Clay Owl, Rubber Texture, Clay Stamps, How To Make Clay, Winter Theme, Clay Projects

1st Grade - Picasso Clowns

This lesson is an "oldie but goodie". My mother and her art teacher pals created this lesson years ago. It has been a great one to pull out every few years. Students look at Picasso Portraits, (Picasso Prezi), and Picasso's Clown he did with simple line. We create ours with black tempera and warm and cool oil pastels. They are always super cute in a group at the arts festival! This is an easy 2 week lesson with great results!

3rd Grade Radial Designs in Paint inspired by Tibetan Mandalas

This lesson is ALWAYS successful... and for EVERY student. I have used different artists or techniques as inspiration over the years. This time, we looked at Tibetan Mandalas. I showed students a Prezi I created on the Smartboard, (Mandala Prezi). I found a great time lapse video of Tibetan Monks creating a sand mandala. The kids love it! Feel free to borrow! These are large, I have a 17" matt board circle. I pre-trace them on 18x18 white 80lb paper for all my students. After the Prezi, they…
