Boxing clever: Alnwick Castle and (inset) the Duchess of Northumberland - Cage Fighting? At Alnwick Castle?
A weekend in Chester
How's this for a country pad? My latest blog post is all about how to spend a fab weekend in Alnwick in Northumberland, packed with castles, beaches, gardens and seafood. And this gorgeous place Alnwick Castle is one of them - home to the Dukes of Northumberland, and you might also recognise it from Downton or Harry Potter. Though it's probably looking a lot snowier right now!
Alnwick Town Hall. Berwick and Alnwick were the only towns in Northumberland to receive medieval defensive walls. But above-ground remains of Alnwick?s defences, apart from Bondgate Tower, have not survived and parts of its course remain uncertain. As a feature which for a time defined the extent of the borough town, though, the former course of the walls has left distinct residual marks upon it.
The Alnwick Poison Garden is pretty much what you’d think it is: a garden full of plants that can kill you (among many other things). Some of the plants are so dangerous that they have to be kept behind bars. Flavia de Luce would love this place.
