January 27, 1606: The trial of Guy Fawkes begins. With a small group of English Catholics, Fawkes had plotted to assassinate King James I by blowing up Parliament. Eight conspirators were tried and found guilty. The other 7 were hanged, drawn, and quartered, but Fawkes managed to jump from the gallows and break his neck, avoiding the worst of the punishment.
