The Milky Way, our home galaxy in space, is a vast galaxy containing 400 billion suns, at least that many planets, and a 4-billion-solar-mass black hole at the center. See how our Milky Way Galaxy works in this Space.com infographic.

Milky Way's Structure Mapped in Unprecedented Detail

Our Milky Way Galaxy: A Traveler's Guide (Infographic) Our home in space is a vast galaxy containing 400 billion suns, at least that many planets, and a black hole at the center.

This Antique Celestial print dates from the 19th Century and beautifully renders an expanse of the milky way and constellations with a warm cream on black. So beautiful! Looks great in both small or large sizes. My antiquarian Astronomy prints are restored to give them a unique design as Wall Art with a beautiful velvety texture and printed on 255gsm Archival Fine Art Paper. The Milky Way Galaxy ~ a spiral galaxy consisting of over 400 billion stars , plus gas and dust arranged into three general components as shown to the left: The halo - a roughly spherical distribution which contains the oldest stars in the Galaxy, The nuclear bulge and Galactic Center. The disk, which contains the majority of the stars, including the sun, and virtually all of the gas and dust

NASA's Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope has unveiled a previously unseen structure centered in the Milky Way. The feature spans 50,000 light-years (roughly half of the Milky Way’s diameter) and may be the remnant of an eruption from a supersized black hole at the center of our galaxy. The structure spans more than half of the visible sky, from the constellation Virgo to the constellation Grus, and it may be millions of years old.

A spectacular new image of the Milky Way has been released to mark the completion of the APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy (ATLASGAL). The APEX telescope in Chile has mapped the full area of the Galactic Plane visible from the southern hemisphere at submillimetre wavelengths — between infrared light and radio waves. This is the sharpest such map yet made, and complements those from recent space-based surveys.

An incredible new picture of the Milky Way shows our home galaxy glowing eerily in wavelengths that are invisible to the human eye, revealing zones of hidden star birth.Shining in submillimeter …

This is an artist's concept of our own Milky Way. In 2008, using infrared images from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, scientists discovered that the Milky Way's spiral structure is dominated by just two arms wrapping off the ends of a central bar of stars.

Our Milky Way Gets a Makeover

The newfound young star clusters lie thousands of light-years below the plane of our Milky Way galaxy, a flat spiral disk seen in this artist's conception.
