Shamil Basayev - and Dagestan Chechen militants led by warlord Shamil Basayev launch two invasions of neighboring Dagestan. Russian forces respond by invading Chechnya. Skirmishes continue to the present day.
After the referendum in October 1991 confirmed Dudaev in his new position as president of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, he declared the republic's sovereignty and its independence from Soviet Union. Dudaev was killed on 21 April 1996, by two laser-guided missiles.

On August members of the gang that plotted to seize the school in Beslan started gathering in the woods near the Psedakh village, Ingushetia (roughly 30 km away from Beslan). The gang was led by a old Ingush - Ruslan Khuchbarov also known as
