When you wish to write a foreign word (such as your name) in Japanese, you use the alphabet system called Katakana. This system is used for words borrowed from other languages, such as English. The Katakana alphabet is used to replicate sounds from those other languages. For instance, my name is Rebecca and it is spelled "レベッカ", pronounced "Rebekka".
