The Battle of Berlin -- Elinor Florence
After Berlin was practically destroyed in 1945, it had to be cleaned up. Most of the work was done by the women. It was a difficult job, chipping all the mortar off the bricks by hand so they could be used again. Berlin bombed for the first time. The damage to Berlin was not great but the demonstration that RAF bombers could hit Berlin proved the Nazi regime's boasts to be false. In turn Hitler ordered retaliation against London, a decision that was to have a significant impact on the course of the air war over Britain.1940

During wartime in Berlin, every apartment building had reinforced bomb shelters in the cellar. The buildings were connected by tunnels, so that if your building was hit, you had a chance of escaping to the next building.
