Tlingit Design Elements: Formline 'U' Shapes - Tlingit Me

Sometimes it’s good to practice single formline elements independent of each other, such as the wide variety of ovoid shapes, or the endless variations of formline ‘u’ shapes. The ‘u’ shape at its most basic, is very similar to the letter ‘u’ with the ends tapering to points and the thick part being the bottom of the cup-like part. ‘U’ shapes can be oriented in any direction. They can be vertical like the letter ‘u’ or they can be horizontal. How they’re oriented changes the flow of the…

Tlingit Art Daily Sketch Jan 10: The Deep - Tlingit Me

Things got very fishy in my Tlingit Art Daily sketch this morning. Sometimes, just to get a starting point, I will draw quick random lines to establish “form” lines. Then it’s just a matter of imagining what creatures or formline shapes will fit nicely into those newly defined areas. As I’m filling in with creatures and shapes and body parts, I’ll often subdivide those areas even more, either bisecting the existing flow of design, or branching off the existing lines. It’s really fun to allow…

Tlingit Art Daily Sketch January 5 - Combining Formline Elements - Tlingit Me

So today I broke my own rule. I used my sketchbook more for drawing formline than for sketching. When I think of sketches, I think of spontaneity and looseness. But today I was quite a bit more deliberate in my design than I intended to be. This is one of my habits that I’ve developed from my early days of practicing our Tlingit art, more generally referred to as Northwest Coast Native Formline. Being deliberate is necessary when first learning the basic rules of formline, one must learn how…

Sterling Silver and 14k Gold Native Owl Pendant and Brooch Combination

This is a bold and beautiful 'Owl' pendant that has been hand-engraved. Made from sterling silver, with 14k gold eyes, this pendant can also be made with a small silver pin soldered to the back upon request, so it can be worn as both a pendant and a pin. Measuring 1 5/8" high by 1 3/8" across, this piece is large enough to catch some eyes but small enough to wear regularly. Within many cultures in the Pacific Northwest, the 'Owl' is a symbol of wisdom and mystery. Nocturnal and stealth…

Tlingit Art Daily Sketch - January 6, Hand Variations - Tlingit Me

I’m liking starting the day with sketching daily Tlingit art designs. How could I not have been doing this all along? Today’s sketch is all about hands; stubby hands, slender fingers, grabby hands, abstract hands… If you’re ever at a loss for an idea for a Tlingit design, try this: concentrate on a body part. There are myriad ways to draw the various body parts. Bill Holm illustrates a number of variations of different claws, hands, feet, eyes, cheek designs, wings, tails, and so on. Just…

The Salmon-Trout Head in Tlingit Formline - Tlingit Me

In earlier posts, I talk about the importance of practicing the most basic shapes in Tlingit formline until you become proficient. Starting with the simplest ovoid, then graduating to increasingly complex versions of the ovoid is good practice. At some point you will discover one variation of the ovoid is what Bill Holm termed the “salmon-trout” head in his landmark Northwest Coast Indian Art: An Analysis of Form. Holm took the term “salmon-trout” from George Emmons list of terms given to…
