Near Earth Asteroids

Second close call in a month was twice as close (at the distance of communication satellites) as last one but less than half the size at 14m wide maximum. The newfound asteroid, named 2016 RB1, is between 4 to 14m wide. The space rock made its closest approach to Earth at 1:28 p.m. EDT. According to NASA's Near Earth Object Program, RB1 zoomed past Earth at a relative speed of over 8.13km/s and passed within 38,463kms of the Earth's surface, 1/10th the average distance between Earth and moon.

How to track an asteroid?

An asteroid has come within an incredible miles of the Earth - making the closest known flyby for a rock of its size. A simulation of asteroid 2012 approaching from the south as it passes through the Earth-moon system (AP/NASA/JPL-Caltech)
