Brier Hill Funeral Youngstown Ohio 1918

Funeral at St. Rocco's Church at 116 Calvin Street in Youngstown, Ohio. St. Rocco's was located in Brier Hill which was predominantly Italian American. Calvin Street overlooked the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company's Jeannette blast furnace and many of the neighborhood residents were employed at the mill. The area is now just an on ramp for the 711 connector.

St. Columba Cathedral lies in ruin – Fire destroyed St. Columba Cathedral on Sept. 2, 1954 when a bolt of lightning struck the church during a late evening storm. According to news accounts of the day, firefighters first responding found the blaze well under way with fire outlining the cathedral’s main rose window.
