Quilting Ergonomics

Good Posture is important in the sewing studio. If your chair is too low, you'll have to reach up and over your machine. This causes the shoulders to scrunch up, the neck to bend forward and your bent wrists will be pressed into the edge of your machine, cutting off your circulation.

3 Sewing Mistakes to Avoid

Dry brushing increases blood flow and naturally improves circulation, which means your organs and muscles receive a better supply of oxygen.

Dry Brushing 101

Greater blood flow = less pain = more sewing time. We know that we detoxify through our sweat, and that sweat leaves through our pores...so it makes sense that creating a clear path will help speed up our body’s natural detoxification.

Overhead Stretch and Reach A great stretch to do while waiting for your bobbin to load. You probably already do it without even realizing it! Interlock your fingers in front, then turn palms outward and press upwards overhead. Hold for 20-30 seconds. Add a little side bend to stretch out our obliques. If you've been sewing for hours, stand up and add a little shake before you stretch.

How tall should your ironing board be? Ironing with the board too high will strain your wrists, shoulders and neck, so now you not only have sore wrists but a headache too. Your ironing surface should be at the hip level or just below, where your elbow sits at a 90-degree angle while ironing is known as the comfort zone. Measure with your hand on the iron- not With your hands on the board’s surface. I’m 5”2 and 1/2, my board stands 34” high. healthyquilting.com
