4th Grade Totem Poles

4th graders just finished a lesson about totem poles. Students learned about the significance of totem poles and that they were (and still are) made by native tribes who lived in the Pacific Northwest region of North America. The big word for this project was stylize. We learned that some artists stylize their work by changing shapes, colors, etc. in order to give their work their own personal touch. Each student created one stylized animal in the style of a real totem pole. (There are some…

Rainbow Art

We painted vertical lines in a rainbow with watercolor. We cut horizontal lines with our scissors and glued them to a black background. This was a little tricky for my students. I would have the students cut one line and then glue it on before cutting the next line. Reiterate that they need to be matching the pieces like a puzzle and make sure that the colors match up before gluing them to the black piece. The kinder kids did a draw-a-long where we used a black marker to draw it, then they painted with tempera cakes and watercolors, following a color sequence. If you would like the step by step lesson plan with photos…

First Nations Legends Foldable

During our unit on First Nations People and European Explorers I came across a foldable idea from Stephanie's blog at "Teaching in Room 6". I loved the idea and quickly adapted it for my student teacher. She was teaching my class about Legends from First Nations People of Canada. I thought the foldable would be a great hands-on link for the students and a good way for my student teacher to quickly assess whether the students had fully understood what the characteristics of legends are. Above…
