The Lions Gate Bridge opened to traffic in November, 1938 but the official opening was on this day, May overseen by this royal couple, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Here are some construction pics to mark the occasion.
The unfinished third Hotel Vancouver in 1931 – a monument to the Great Depression The empty shell of the hotel would stand over the city for almost a decade. A giant monument to the dire financial plight the depression wrought upon Vancouver.
These handsome looking townhomes were replaced by a commercial building decades later, only the have replaced by what you see here, which in turn will be replaced by a new massive development encompassing this entire square block.
All of these buildings are still there but the Orpheum sign has changed. Although it looks like the bracketing for the sign is the same in both pictures. This is on the east side of the street close to Smithe street.
