ASSESSMENT: Running Records Students read a leveled text aloud, and the teacher marks the errors as they read. The teacher can also ask comprehension questions. As a formative assessment, it can help teachers find out each child's basic level for appropriate groupings for guided readings, as well as find areas that the whole class might need support.

Fatty Legs Webinar Series & Resources - Empowering the Spirit

INSTRUCTION: Fatty Legs Webinar Series provides two webinars that provide context to Fatty Legs, a novel about residential school. There are also resources for teachers to do a novel study such as chapter questions, and visual imagery activities. I was considering teaching this novel during my practicum, and look forward to going through these additional resources to be better prepared. The webinar quality is low, but still has valuable information, and the resources are great.

Paired (or Partner) Reading | Classroom Strategy | Reading Rockets

Paired reading is a research-based fluency strategy used with readers who lack fluency. In this strategy, students read aloud to each other. When using partners, more fluent readers can be paired with less fluent readers, or children who read at the same level can be paired to reread a story they have already read. Paired reading can be used with any book, taking turns reading

INSTRUCTION: Tricky Words Strategies gives children several options when they come across a word they don't know including: re-reading, chunking, looking at pictures, sliding through the word, and skipping hard words and going back later. Includes teaching the strategy, modelling, and providing visuals at the board and at their desks. I like that there are several strategies, and that children can practise independently.

ASSESSMENT: The Cafe Menu board has 4 categories: comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and expanding vocabulary. Students can select which area they want to focus their attention on. I like that this assessment gives children choice so that they can really think about what area they are focusing on. Supports metacognition as they think about the different ways they can learn.

INSTRUCTION: This cross-curricular program blends art, social studies and literacy. I like the integration of subjects, and the transferring of story to drama.
