Traditional Turkish Weaving

Traditionally, mothers in Turkey were home weavers who taught the skills to their children. Daughters grew up beside their mothers, married and became the next generation of home weavers and teachers. Sons became weaving apprentices in commercial settings. In the last four decades, mechanization has driven family handloom weaving into decline. Jennifer’s Hamam is committed to preserving this Turkish art form by working exclusively with artisans on old-style shuttle looms. Centuries of cultural knowledge and skill combine with design and the highest quality, locally sourced natural fibers to create textiles of incomparable quality. #handloom #weaving #Turkey

When traditional weaving went into decline, weavers could no longer afford to travel to source quality threads. This gave rise to traveling salesmen offering inferior mixed or synthetic threads at expensive prices. We solved this problem by supplying our weavers with locally-sourced threads spun from pure, natural linen, silk and GOTS-certified organic cotton. Top-quality raw materials + shuttle loom weaving = beautiful textiles that improve with each wash and last for decades with proper…

To reduce the presence of lint created by shuttle motion, one inventive, Turkish home weaver dug a pit in her floor lined with a special white clay. The loom and weaver were positioned 1/2 above and 1/2 below ground. As natural fibre particles flew while she worked, they stuck to the clay, keeping the air in the family’s sitting room clean. A vanishing art form, this one-of-a-kind loom was dismantled when the weaver passed away. #jennifershamam #handloom #weaving #Turkey #clay

Our silk weaver, Meta, learned his skills the traditional way: growing up beside his mother working at home. She taught her son everything from raising silk worms, spinning & reeling thread, design & weaving technique, to dyeing with natural ingredients. #JennifersHamam #Turkey #silk #workingmothers #women #handloom #weaving #Turkey

Meta has inherited the cultural legacy of Turkish silk production from the Silk Mother. She passed the skills to her child as weaving mothers have done for generations. Centuries of technique and design have come down to this one son of the Silk Mother.  #silk #handloom #weaving #Turkey #SilkMother #jennifershamam

Meta’s reeled thread is drawn from the strands of 50 cocoons with fingers so sensitive that if just one strand of filament drops, he immediately feels it and brushes in another. #silk #reeledsilk #JennifersHamam

The extraordinary Seven Wonders, woven by a Central Anatolian master weaver, combines two layers together with multiple colors across one weaving line. A lost art, when this brilliant artisan passed away, his looms were dismantled and sold for scrap. An all too common tragedy as mechanization threatens traditional shuttle loom weaving. #handloom #weaving #Turkey #7wonders #jennifershamam

A Patriarch's Wish, Fulfilled

Warp threads run the length of a textile from the çözgü: a large cylindrical beam fixed at the back of a loom. Humidity wreaks havoc with threads, especially if it only affects some of them. Those will shrink, while dry threads won’t, misshaping the cloth after washing. To prevent this, our weavers layer sheets of newspaper between çözgü threads to absorb any moisture and keep the roll dry, ensuring a beautiful finished product. #warp #çözgü #handloom #weaving #Turkey #jennifershamam

Heddles are loops of wire or cord attached to a loom’s harness. There is 1 heddle for each thread of the warp. Heddles separate and lift the warp threads creating the shed through which weft threads pass on the shuttle. #jennifershamam #threads #heddles #loom #handloom #shuttle #weaving
