The goal: Land 75,000 British, Australian, and New Zealand troops on Turkey Mediterranean coast and drive up the Gallipoli Peninsula to Istanbul, seat of the Ottoman Empire. The April 1915 invasion went well - but then Commonwealth leaders chose to slow their advance. The Turks rallied. By mid-May, 25,000 Allies were dead or wound; by year's end, the surviving troops were evacuated.
