I’m Changing How I Detangle My Hip-Length Hair
♥️ I have been undergoing a major evolution in my all natural hair growth promoting routine. Namely, to do with the use of brushes and combs. I used to think these things were anathema (for me and my hair), and now that I have acquired the right kind of tools and techniques I am falling in love with brushes and combs! 🌸This clip was taken a bit earlier in my "evolution" before my newest hair care tools (ie some special wooden combs and a wooden brush) had arrived. I still love boar bristle brushes as well! But the principle is the same: using your natural sebum as a hair styling product by distributing it down your hair, and gently brushing or combing the scalp to keep it clean, vital, and free from buildup.

Why Have Long Hair if You Where It up All the Time? What’s the Point?

You don't actually need to be doing this to your hair...
💇🏻‍♀️Newsflash: you don’t need to be constantly washing, and wet-styling your hair in order for it to grow and be healthy. When I started following a historically inspired hair care routine 7 years ago, my hair was chin length and had never been able to grow very long or healthy. Now, my hair is nearly down to my thighs, and very healthy indeed. Lately, I have only been washing it once a month! 💕Did you know that historical people were pros when it came to dry-cleansing hair? Yes, you heard that right. It is possibly to clean hair when it is completely dry. One of the main ways historical people did this was by using boar bristle brushes, special combing techniques, and generally keeping the hair in protective styles or entirely covered. 💕If I had not have made this mindset shift, I
Does Being Busy Equal Bad Hair?
👩‍🦱 More often than I care to admit, I have been really letting the busyness of my life get in the way of taking regular, consistent good care of my hair. Which meant that when the time came to wash my hair, it was so tangled and so matted that it would literally take me an entire day of working through my hair in sections to get it done, which just made me dread washing my hair and caring for my hair all the more. This hair care challenge, I've been really just honing in on being consistent with regular hair care, even if life feels really busy. And I've been learning a lot of new things too about what my hair likes and what it doesn't like and trying things that I had not otherwise been doing consistently that I think I might want to add to my daily consistent hair care routine in the
You Need to Try This Centuries Old Hair Care Tool
👩‍🦱 Boar bristle brushes are one of the most underrated hair growth tools! This is the second winter in a row that I've been inspired to get more consistent with my boar bristle hair brushing. As a curly haired person, it can be easy to think "maybe it's just not for me." But every time I begin using it again, I am re-convinced of its unbelievable benefits! Regular boar bristle brushing has gotten my hair out of an awfully tangled rut I had been in, and brought increased shine, moisture, and manageability. What Haircare Looks Like When You Are Sick
👩‍🦰 Let's be real, the "me" you see in most of my videos isn't the "me" you'd see walking around my house most days, ha! Part of what I love about long hair AND this natural, historical hair care routine is just how minimalist my daily hair care can be. As long as my hair is kept detangled and moisturized with oils and butters, it's golden. I have been using this DIY hair strengthening spray recently, made with aloe vera power and amla, steeped in water and then cooled and strained. It is amazing and keeping my hair strong! Recipe is in the post prior to this one ☺️ Thanks Jessica for the cream! I've been using it on my face and my hair ♥️ Link in bio for more info about the hair care challenge! #hairgrowth #historicalhair #historicalhaircare #katherinesewing #hairvlogger
What I Will Be Doing Differently With My Hair
👩‍🦰 Are you in? I will be using this month to get more consistent on giving my hair the daily TLC it needs. Dry finger detangling, applying oils and butters to my ends (because, Canadian winter, ahem) and taking care of myself. I will also be using this time to get back into regular use of Ayurvedic herbs, because I have a few more split ends than I would like and I am going to use a DIY Ayurvedic hair strengthening spritz on my ends to heal and prevent this. I just made this with two herbs I happened to have on hand - amla and aloe vera powder. I didn't follow a recipe but it was approximately 2 tsp amla, 1 tsp aloe vera, and 2 cups water. I poured this through a paper towel to filter out the sediment and put into a spray bottle. 💕 Check out my linktree for more info on the haircare ch

Try Apple Cider Vinegar Rinsing Your Hair for One Month!
👩‍🦰 The next aspect of this hair care challenge is going to be using apple cider vinegar rinses. Or alternatively, if your hair really doesn't like the vinegar or you'd rather not use it, you can also use aloe vera juice as a rinse. Both of these rinses are slightly acidic, which is important for a final hair rinse. This is the last step you do before getting out of the shower. Although I do tend to rinse out the vinegar before I actually do get out of the shower, some people don't. But the reason it's important is because hair's ph is naturally somewhat acidic. And so sometimes, especially if we're using something like clay to wash our hair, clay is very mineral rich, and it's therefore more alkaline. And so as a final step, we want to bring our hair back to its naturally somewhat acidi
Try Clay Washing Your Hair for One Month!
👩‍🦱 The first method that we're going to be using in our hair care challenge is using clay washes in our hair, likely instead of shampoo. I myself use rhassoul clay. That is the type of clay that I have been using for the past seven years to grow my own hair out so long. So that is the type of clay that I'm going to recommend starting out with. However, if you have difficulty accessing it or if your hair is extremely oily, then you can use bentonite clay as well. But basically we mix a certain amount of clay. I usually do about a third of a cup of clay powder to two cups of liquid. I mostly just use water, although you can do half water and half aloe vera juice if you want to be more fancy. And then you can also add in some essential oils that promote hair growth and scalp health like la

Hair Length and Hygiene
👩‍🦰 I found a historical Edwardian period hair care manual that talks about it being very common for 13 year old girls, almost universally, to have waist length hair. That's not something we necessarily see a whole lot of today. And if you take that forward, it means that by the time they're an adult, their hair would be quite longer. So they knew something that we don't about growing long hair. And that was what first drove of my impulse to look more into how they care for their hair and how it drastically differs from our modern way of looking at hair care and specifically hair hygiene. #haircare #historicalhaircare #naturalhaircare #haircaretips
