As a physical representation of spiritual energy, the Medicine Wheel is a circle divided in four parts. It honors the four cardinal directions (East, South, West and North), four Seasons of the year (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter), four elements (Fire, Water, Earth and Air) and our four levels of existence (Spiritual, Emotional, Physical and Mental). Some also relate different power animals to each cardinal direction and the four colours of human races (Yellow, Red, Black and White). The medicine wheel has been used by aboriginal cultures in North and South America for 10,000 years. It is a symbol of the circle of life, used in prayer and to bring balance to one’s life. The circle of the Anishinaabe medicine wheel is continuous, with no beginning and no end. Everything in life is sacred – the earth, animals, plants … everything affects one another. The four colours of the medicine wheel are spirits. Each one is associated with a life stage. Native American Prayers, Aboriginal Education, Mantras
