ACAD (A Character A Day) 2

I set myself a drawing challenge of designing a different character a day for a year, so that at the end of that time I'd have 365 characters. I'm now into my seventh year, and have drawn over 2310 characters. Here are some of them ....

Rage ... we found it in a pen beneath the main keep. We fed it, for our mages wanted to twist it their own ends, but we never let it out under any circumstances. If we approached its cage it would rush the bars in a paroxysm of fury, clawing at them till its fingers bled. Then one day it was taken away by Oriaste, and we never saw it in that form again. I say that form, because Oriaste shaped it to his use, and lets its rage come to full flower to curse the world ...

William Tuttle ... this drawing purports to be a portrait of the famed man, and it is a good likeness. The paper is from the right time period, but this drawing has been done in markers, and the star systems illustrated were not visible from earth in Tuttle's time. Only the advent of the Hubble Space Telescope has enabled us to see these systems. We also have descriptions of this locket indicating that the drawing was created while Tuttle was alive. The investigation continues ...

Sleepy Sam Dozier ... with his hooded eyes and measured ways, Sam always seemed to be on the brink of fallin' asleep. But there wern't nobody faster with a sixgun than him, and most folks gave him a wide berth on the street and in the saloon. He got his in the back in the fall of '83...

The Galaxy Maker ... before the galaxies, she was. But now she dipped her hand in the atoms of the Universe, and from that the galaxies were birthed in all their wonder, and their mystery. Oh, I know that is not what our latest science teaches us, but I will say this. I was there in that beginning time, and when it was done I held her hand, and I hold it still, and my only purpose in this life is to re-unite with her - the truth that transcends all life, and even death itself ...

Cyrus "Toothpick" Scroggins ... he probably didn't weigh more'n 110 pounds, and barely spoke above a whisper when he was yellin', but he was damn good with a sixgun, so he never had no cause to raise his voice to any man. He just let his gun barrel do the talkin' ...

The Raedian Merman ... he emerged from the water and rested. As always he pondered the nature of the division between the two worlds. Those worlds were very different from each other, yet they both teemed with life, and a being like himself could cross the border easily between the two. Did that make him privileged or special in some way? Or rather, did it make him uniquely alone, being not wholly of one world or the other? And so he pondered ...

The X Demon ... with his hands manacled by the mage Oriaste he was imprisoned in Hell for two thousand years. Yet, in his rage, he was not idle. The manacles he couldn' t break, but his mind was able to discover a way to use the x pattern in the shackles to create even more powerful spells. Now he would use them to wreak his revenge. Oriaste was dead, but he would kill all of his descendants, unto the 100th generation. And that was only the beginning of his plans ...

Soldier 3 ... it was the last redoubt, the last barrier, the last objective to be taken, and he would do his job as he had done all along, to the last. The war was winding down, the enemy was beaten, and most of his men were covering their rear ends, but he wouldn't change the way he fought. If he had to die what difference would it make if it was to be in the next few minutes, or in a cozy bed fourty years hence? What difference would it really make?

Chandragar Dragon ... for over four hundred years it stood on the shores of Lake Jatri. It was said that it had come to our land, ravaged the countryside, then took the position it now held. Many doubted that it had ever been alive, and mocked those old stories. But I alone knew the truth. I had approached the creature and heard its breathing. I had read the ancient texts that foretold its coming. But who would listen to me - a woman, and a member of the vatriya caste?

Swamp Possum Postal Frog ... neither marauding Pickerel, choking weeds or wandering fisherman shall stay this frog in his appointed rounds. The mail, in carefully packaged plastic sleeves, shall get through!

Sabradin ... it was the dark lord of this woodland, and it had found me, an interloper, in its realm. I stayed absolutely stock still while it surveyed me, its heavy breathing the only sound in in this glade where my fate was to be decided. Then it looked up and, with a deep rumble in its throat, sprung towards me ...

Aradia, daughter of Diana ... in my invocation of Diana I could only see her dimly, as if obscured by distance, even through she seemed to stretch across the sky itself.. Instead, it was her daughter Aradia who came and listened to my pleas, and spread her arms wide to accept me. This drawing can only poorly approximate what I saw, just as these words can only faintly suggest what I felt ...

The Sword Dancer ... her dance finished, she turned to face them, weapons at the ready. With a tiny gesture from the Emperor,.she would lower them to her side. With another, she would wield them with deadly force. She had no preference either way. She was only a tool in his hands, and a tool can have no emotion, no feelings. And she had none ...

The Lane Walker ... he'd escaped from the Kingston pen, and had been on the run for 8 days, hiding in the wooded areas north of the city, walking the lanes and sideroads and stealing when he needed food or money. But now he wanted to 'settle down'. and he pushed himself through the rain into an ever more secluded area, until he found a cottage. Lucky, he thought, there are people here, because he no longer just wanted food or money. He wanted something more ...
