Joseph Lister (for whom Listerine is named) was the father of antiseptic surgery. While no one believed Semmelweis that hand washing could cut down on infection in the 1850s, by the 1880s, Lister was able to get this concept across to doctors, making operating theaters, bandages, instruments sterile and introducing patient washing, doctor hand washing, gloves and surgical gowns. Within a few years in England, post surgical mortality from infection almost disappeared. He became a hero.
