For the Fallen With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children England mourns for her dead across the sea, Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit, Fallen in the cause of the free. In Flanders' Fields

Arguably the best-known Canadian poem ever written, "In Flanders' Field" by John McCrea was written very quickly, immediately following the interment of what was left of this Canadian army surgeon's best friend, crystallising a moment of grief and despair that was shared by all who were affected by the first world war. This is a summary of a small part of a very moving talk by Tim Cook, presented at the Toronto Reference Library last night, on McCrae and his war. May they all rest in peace.
