Alain de Botton examines our ideas of success and failure -- and questions the assumptions underlying these two judgments. Is success always earned? Is failure? He makes an eloquent, witty case to move beyond snobbery to find true pleasure in our work.

Swiss Philosopher, Alain de Botton: A kinder, gentler philosophy of success via TED

I disagree. Cynicism isn't that far from skepticism, and skepticism is just questioning things. All good scientists are skeptics. Blind faith is the evil, not questioning. As for the pessimist/ optimist question, psychologically sometimes pessimism is healthier. http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/201110/the-uses-and-abuses-optimism-and-pessimism

cynicism masquerades as wisdom, but it is the farthest thing from it. because cynics don't learn anything. because cynicism is a self-imposed blindness, a rejection of the world because we are afraid it will hurt us or disappoint us.
