Driftwood galore - can you resist?
Enjoy empty Beaches during our Storm Season, guided by one of our naturalists. These logs have been tossed onto the higher rocks by the winter waves. The coloration of the rocks is caused by algae, living in this so called 'splash zone'.
This entanglement of Bull-kelp and other seaweeds can be found after a good storm on Tofino's beaches. Bull-kelp is the fastest growing seaweed in the world - up to 7inch a day and to about 37ft in total length. Sea-otters use it to entangle their young into the top blades, so they don't drift away.
This bleached driftwood now is a nursery for new life.
