To be successful at reading and written expression, students need spelling skills and word knowledge. Understanding

In addition to learning to read and spell high-frequency words, students must also learn to decode and spell using patterns in unfamiliar words. Although chapter 5 of CTW provides numerous detailed lesson frameworks that I could use in my classroom, it also developed my understanding of spelling and word study. I like that each lesson explains both the how and why and includes step-by-step instructions and resources such as the most common spelling patterns and the Nifty-Thrifty-Fifty Words.

This module on Reading Rockets provides a vast array of resources in one spot. This online resource develops a solid understanding of spelling and how to promote spelling skills and provides links to many research articles related to spelling and word study. I particularly like that it includes information for both parents and teachers, which can facilitate a home-school partnership supporting literacy development.

Instruction

In this activity, a well-known memory game is turned into a task supporting spelling. This is an effective strategy for practicing and learning to spell critical and high-frequency words. As a teacher I would use this card game for direct instruction, daily practice, review, and assessment knowing that the more often students are exposed to high frequency words the more likely they will be able to commit the spelling of these words to memory (BLD, 2016).

Word walls are a practical teaching tool to support spelling, word study and vocabulary. In this instance, a co-constructed word wall is used in the upper grades to teach high-frequency irregularly spelled words and homophones. I appreciate this activity because it can be used as a method for teaching spelling and as a resource, both of which are still relevant even in the junior grades.

This comprehensive publication provides detailed information regarding the teaching of spelling in today’s schools. Of particular note is the section outlining common approaches to spelling instruction and the implications for classroom instruction. I have a better understanding of whole-word, phonemic and morphemic spelling instruction and why all three should be combined for an integrated approach.

This activity for students in grades 1-3 can be used for assessment in addition to instruction in spelling and word study. The activity takes only 10 minutes and can be given to the whole class, but each student’s worksheet can be used to assess their knowledge of letter-sound correspondences and letter patterns. This task can easily be adapted for ELLs by using visual and verbal clues and can be modified based on word complexity or targeted spelling pattern.
