This is the model of a steampunk key that I built. It served as part of a Halloween costume, and as inspiration for one of my children's books.
I bought this door knocker on the streets of Old Shanghai for only a dollar or two. After bringing it home, I decided to paint and weather it. I saw a very similar door knocker in a back alley, just around the corner from where I purchased it, and so thought I would try to capture the same spirit.
I picked up this 1872 print of the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland from a delightful shop called Marchpane in Cecil Court, London. I've been to this street several times; it's a celebration of art and literature.
These are three of my favorite photos from my travels: ceremonial weapons on the Great Wall of China, the stone head of a buddha statue cradled in the roots of a bodhi tree at Ayutthaya, Thailand, and a spiraling staircase at St. Stephens' Basilica in Budapest, Hungary.
