mathematical provocations in K/1 classrooms

During September I visited Louesa Byrne's K/1 classroom at Thompson and Lauren MacLean's K/1 classroom at Blair. Over several visits we created mathematical provocations for the students to engage with mathematics and allow the teachers an opportunity to assess what their students were able to do in the area of patterning and general number sense. Can you stack 5 rocks? Mathematical Intention: one-to-one correspondence, counting, decomposing 5 into parts What different patterns can you make?…

Scrappy Moms Stamps Sneak Peak #2

Happy Father's Day!! I hope all the dad's out there are having a great one! :D Today I am sharing a present that my kids made for their dad... When researching Inukshuks for our new Proudly Canadian set I discovered that people can make their own mini Inukshuks. I thought the kids would have fun building some. :) We bought rocks at Michael's (note - after they were done we found that our Dollar Tree sells the same bags, oh well! LOL) and started planning our Inukshuks. The hardest part is…

an inukshuk... and ted.

The 4th graders did a project based on the work of Canadian artist Ted Harrison last week. I found out about his work on one of the blogs I follow, the Artist Woman. Ted is primarily a landscape painter who uses a strong palette of color in his work. These colors often fill closed shapes and do not blend into each other. His landscapes are of the Yukon territory in Canada. In one of these paintings he included an inukshuk. An inukshuk is a stone sculpture in the form of an abstract person…

Ted Harrison was originally from Yorkshire, England and lived in the Yukon for many years. I was privileged to meet him on several occasions and interview him for an artists profile. A lovely man, much missed by Yukoners, since he moved south to British Columbia. Some don't like his art. I love it, these colors evoke the beauty of the Yukon for me.
