The quality & color range vary from each manufacturer. My personal preference is soft pastels (rather than oil pastels). The soft "chalk" type are available in firmer sticks - on down the line to very soft, as well as in the Pan Pastel line. The surfaces vary from special textured to sanded papers & boards.
