Spooky Sudbury

Sudbury is home to the Big Nickel, a 30 ft replica of a 1951 Cdn Nickel & Inco Superstack, which, until 1987, was the world’s largest free-standing chimney at 1250 ft. With over 330 lakes within the city limits, it is an outdoor lover’s wonderland, rich with various seasonal sports, and the birthplace of more than eighty NHL hockey players. But there are other strange things afoot in this peaceful northern municipality; things not readily visible, but which lurk just beneath the surface.

“It’s like a going away card,” Tom said. “People had written all over the walls. Everybody signed it.” Their messages varied — some had recounted tales of their days working in the hospital, others simply said farewell, and some wrote what appeared to be inside jokes. The etchings on the wall only added to the spooky aura around the building, Tom said.

Burwash jail. "The old prison building, while deteriorating, still stands — a ghostly echo of the population that used to live within those walls."

"The vast forests of Northeastern Ontario that surround Sudbury are no stranger to sightings of a similar creature that is known as either Sasquatch or Bigfoot. In December of 2012, a family filmed a video of what was believed to be the Bigfoot creature in a remote area southwest of Sudbury. A video lasting several minutes was shot; it recorded a series of the large humanoid bare footprints in the snow, in the field adjacent to the road, as well as crossing the road itself."

Rob Sacchetto creates “zombified” images of just about everything: people, celebrities, animals and beyond. He’s been commissioned to create fifty-two different zombies for a deck of playing cards, he’s been a named character in a graphic novel, and he’s even made zombie look-alike targets for a gun company. People have his zombies tattooed on them, and he even has a daily zombie blog, where he adds another zombie portrait every day.

Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. "These tiny ghost-like neutrinos, Barnes writes, which pass through everything at virtually undetectable speeds, are not stopped by the two kilometres (6800 feet) of rock which do filter out the bombardment of cosmic rays. That, combined with the Creighton Mine area site exuding an extremely low level of natural radiation, gave the least possible interference with the required scientific observations."

In the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory in Canada detected all three types of neutrinos coming from the sun, helping solve the solar neutrino problem.

It was a devastating blow, and proved to be the death knell of the town.

Benny, Ontario. "Just a small handful of cabins still exist, within a stone’s throw of the still-operational CPR rail track that runs through the town. These buildings, where a small group of residents still dwell, are the only sign of life in the town."
