The Kettle Valley Railway opened in 1915 to support silver mining in the Kootenays. It was abandoned in portions from 1961 to 1989. Now the section through Myra Canyon (located South of Kelowna on Okanagan Mountain) is popular for biking. The section includes 18 wooden trestles and two tunnels and was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 2002. In 2003, the Okanagan wildfire destroyed 12 of the trestles. Restoration of the damaged trestles occurred between 2004 and 2008.
